Full Professorship in Gastroenterology

The Medical Faculty of the University of Bern in collaboration with the Inselspital Bern (Bern University Hospital), Switzerland offers a

Full Professorship in Gastroenterology combined with the position of Director and Chief Physician of Gastroenterology

as of 01.08.2024 or by agreement.

The University Clinic for Visceral Surgery and Medicine comprises three specialties: visceral and transplant Surgery, gastroenterology and hepatology. For the holistic and interdisciplinary treatment of patients with abdominal disorders, the three specialties are combined in one department with coordinated inpatient and outpatient services. The University Clinic for Visceral Surgery and Medicine and the University Clinic for Diabetology, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism were recently merged to form the new clinical focus “Abdomen & Metabolism”. In addition, there is close cooperation with other medical and surgical disciplines throughout the campus. State of the art laboratories including access to a world-leading germ-free and gnotobiotic research unit (Clean Mouse Facility) are part of the infrastructure portfolio.

The Department of Gastroenterology is a leading institution for gastrointestinal diseases and offers all modern endoscopic methods and interventions at tertiary level. Successful applicants should have a strong academic record at an internationally competitive level with a well-established portfolio in a basic research topic (e.g. intestinal immunology, systems biology of microbiota research).

We are looking for an innovative and visionary personality who can represent the entire field of gastroenterology and excels with profound clinical knowledge. An outstanding research track with international visibility, an established scientific network and proof of competitive acquisition of third-party funding are expected. Habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification is required. Didactic competence for teaching as well as a strong commitment to the promotion of young academics are equally important.

Proven management and leadership experience, the ability to integrate oneself into existing structures as well as a high level of social competence and communication skills are important elements. Ideally, you have a good knowledge of the German- and/or French language or are prepared to learn it.
