The Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS) is seeking a dedicated Medical Doctor to lead our Virology and Serology service within the Microbiology Department. This is a permanent, full-time position.
About the Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS)
The LNS is a key player in Luxembourg’s healthcare sector, providing essential services to patients, doctors, and hospitals. Operating under the Ministry of Health and Social Security, the LNS is a multidisciplinary public institution with six medical departments and a team of 400 highly qualified professionals. Our primary mission is to deliver analytical diagnostics and scientific expertise for the prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring of human diseases. Additionally, we serve as a national control or reference laboratory and conduct forensic investigations.
About the Microbiology Department
The Microbiology Department at LNS consists of approximately 52 employees organized into three diagnostic services of which Virology and Serology specializes in the detection and analysis of viral infections and the diagnosis of syndromic infectious diseases using molecular biology and serological methods. This service is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring acute respiratory infections, HIV, and viral hepatitis. It also functions as an expert laboratory for Enterovirus and Poliovirus. Bacteriology, Mycology, Antibiotic Resistance, and Hospital Hygiene as well as Pathogen Sequencing are closely collaborating.
Job Responsibilities for Head of Service (Virology and Serology)
As the Head of Service, you will lead a team of ten, overseeing administrative, financial, and operational tasks. Your key responsibilities will include ensuring high-quality sample processing in accordance with our quality management standards, collaborating with clinicians, participating in research and introducing new methods and tests, engaging in national reference laboratory activities, contributing to preparedness strategies for emerging viruses and pandemics, and participating in the Biological Defence Laboratory’s bioterrorism preparedness efforts.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Medical Doctor with expertise in clinical microbiology/virology or pharmacologist-biologist with report-signing authorization and training in management, infection control, and One Health.
- Authorisation to practice as medical doctor in Luxembourg
- Proficiency in molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease surveillance.
- Minimum 5 years of diverse microbiology experience and quality management
- Research-oriented with strong hospital connections.
- Excellent task management, proactive work ethic, and collaborative mind set.
- Proficiency in English; French, German or Luxembourgish is a plus.
