Environmental Medicine
Successor of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Stephan Letzel
(comparable to salary grade W3 LBesG)

The Institute of Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine (ASU) at the University Medical Center Mainz represents its three fields in research, teaching and patient care with national and international visibility. The Institute of Teachers‘ Health (IfL) is affiliated with the ASU. The IfL assumes statutory tasks of occupational health and safety-related supervision at state schools in Rhineland-Palatinate.
We are looking for an internationally recognized researcher who represents the field of occupational, social and environmental medicine in research and teaching (including the training of young researchers and academic career development) and ensures medical services in the field of occupational health. Moreover, after the current holder of the position has retired, the professor will be the scientific head of the IfL and responsible for its further strategic development. In addition to outstanding academic qualifications and relevant medical expertise, leadership skills, strong communication skills and the willingness to cooperate are required.
Research on relevant social developments is also an important component of this position. This includes topics such as evidence-based prevention in a rapidly changing working world, the integration of chronically ill employees, the health of students and teachers in changing living conditions, and digitalization. In addition to a doctorate and extensive methodological competence, the future holder of the position is expected to have broad expertise and international recognition in relevant areas of occupational, social and environmental medicine.
Scientific independence and excellence must be evidenced through high-ranked publications and competitive third-party funding. Scientific integration in the core research fields of the University Medical Center Mainz is desired.
The future holder of the position will also be responsible for ensuring that the ASU is able to provide teaching for students in medical programs. The willingness to contribute to the development of innovative and interdisciplinary forms of teaching and teaching programs is expected. Accordingly, demonstrable teaching competence as well as a habilitation or alternative qualifications according to § 49, subsection 1 no. 4a and § 49, subsection 2 Higher Education Act.
In order to manage and ensure occupational medical services in the Institute's outpatient clinic as well as further training for doctors in training, applicants must be recognized medical specialists in occupational medicine, have the authorization for further training and a medical license.
All remaining conditions for employment are defined in § 49 of the German Higher Education Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
On principle, a private-law employment relationship with the University Medical Center is provided for. In the case of the successful applications of those who hold tenure for life as a civil servant, may continue to hold this position according to § 20 subsection 2 Universitätsmedizingesetz. The State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University Medical Center pursue a concept of intensive support for students and expect instructors to maintain a high presence. Since the professor will provide occupational medicine services and teach in German language degree programs, German language proficiency is required.
